Nikos Kazantzakis University of Athens is a private, non-profit higher education institution established in 1971 with special approval from Greece’s Ministry of Education. Founded to honor Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis, the university initially operated as "Nikos Kazantzakis University" in Heraklion, Crete, with a sole Faculty of Philosophy and Literature dedicated to perpetuating the author’s ethos of "breaking free from intellectual shackles."
